MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
All assignments for this course are submitted electronically and as they are performed. Multiple Intelligences is an optimistic concept. It says that everyone is smart and that we can all become even smarter. Multiple Intelligences is also an easy concept to grasp, because we see evidence of the various intelligences every day of our lives. Furthermore, as teachers and as students, we have seen a variety of intelligences in action to aid learning.  If Multiple Intelligences is easy to grasp, and if we already see various intelligences applied in teaching, why bother with this course?  It is to make the good even better, to provide you with even more ideas about how Multiple Intelligences theory connects with teaching and to give you time to think about how to apply those ideas to your own teaching and to develop your own ideas.

GENGHIS KAHN AND TAMERLANE
This course takes a look at two of the greatest conquerors the world has ever known: Genghis Khan and Tamerlane. Each conquered an empire larger than the Roman Empire and with relatively small armies. It studies their tactics, their treatment of conquered people and their contributions, if any, to society. Also examined are their methods of managing their huge empires.

THOSE FIRST YEARS OF TEACHING
Teaching is an incredibly challenging profession, yet one that offers a wonderful opportunity for sharing a love of learning and helping guide young people through their formative years. This course will provide strategies and ideas for surviving the first few difficult years. It is intended to be a practical, hands-on course that will provide you with strategies and ideas you can use in your own classroom, rather than simply exploring educational theories.

THREE FOR THE ROAD
The three books which serve as the texts for this course are by three very different authors who share two things in common: the romance of the open road and the life of the mind. You will follow their adventures and their thoughts about life and literature, respond to their thinking, and plan a trip of your own.

WATERCOLOR BASICS

Whether watercolor is something you have always wanted to try as a learning component in your classroom or personally, or have dabbled in and find you have more questions than answers, this is the class for you. You move through an easy progression of exercise with talking points, plenty of photo references for the techniques under discussion, and self-evaluation questions. Included is everything from choosing your supplies to learning secrets on running washes, wet blending, color mixing, glazing for transparent effects, negative painting techniques, and finally how to put it all together. The instructor, renowned watercolor artist Caroline Buchanan, is available for dialogue and help through the course, teaching in a nonjudgmental and encouraging way.

TEACHING GIFTED CHILDREN IN THE REGULAR CLASSROOM
Have you ever considered gifted students as a part of the at-risk population? Are you assuming gifted students progress regardless of their learning environment? The discoveries you make within this course will provide confidence for the regular classroom teacher, enhance the survival risk of gifted students, and benefit all students in the regular classroom. This course will give you insight into the characteristics and needs of this population, as well as suggest methods for identifying academically gifted students. You will also learn practical strategies for servicing gifted kids

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE: The Science, Impact and Politics
of a World Environmental Crisis

This course is conducted entirely by email. There are a number of widely held misconceptions about climate change, and unfortunately, these are reflected in some of the educational materials available to educators. It is therefore crucial for teachers to educate themselves and their students with accurate information and be careful not to reinforce common but incorrect notions. Climate change is truly interdisciplinary and must be addressed in all grade levels. Therefore, this course is appropriate for teachers of all subject areas and grades. Email dialog with the instructor is not only advantageous, but is strongly encouraged. All assignments are submitted electronically and as they are performed.
