Name: MAUI: Its Towns and People
Credits: 3 semester hours of professional
development credit
Course Description:This
course on beautiful Maui takes you to Wailuki, Lahaina and Hokulani.
In-depth history is related by noted Hawaiian historians, James Lucky
and Holt Padilla. You will take a walking tour of Wailuku and Iao State
Park, and personally experience all the beauty, history and magnificence
of this luscious and meaningful island.
Course Outline: A self-directed course including several
texts, one DVD, two audio CDs, and several on-site visits in Maui. A
minimum of 45 hours of study will be required to successfully complete
this course.
Method of Evaluating Student's Performance: Correction
of answer sets, assessment of informal analyses and projects based on
specific criteria outlined in course instructions, and verification
of hours dedicated to completing course work. A grade and transcript
are issued upon completion and evaluation of course requirements.
Textbooks and Other Materials Included in This Course:
Books: Hawaii by Michener, Re-Discover Wailuku, The Story

ALL HOME STUDY:
Course
Name: CHILDREN IN CRISIS
Credits: 3 semester hours of professional
development credit
Course Description: This course is designed to acquaint
the teacher with several of the more serious problems some children
exhibit in the classroom. It is not designed to cure these disorders,
rather to help the teacher recognize symptoms so the child may receive
help and understanding rather than suffer frustration and embarrassment.
These problems include Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, fetal alcohol effects,
Attention Deficit Disorder, the problems of children in foster homes
and stresses encountered by children of different cultures.
Course Outline: A self-directed course including four
texts, one videotape and a project. A minimum of 45 hours of study will
be required to successfully complete this course.
Method of Evaluating Student's Performance: Correction

utilizing the INTERNET:
Course Name: THE BRONTE SISTERS
Credits: 3 semester hours of professional
development credit
Course Description: The Bronte Sisters works are well
known and popular. Learn more about these fascinating and talented sisters
by communicating with Bronte fans and scholars on a variety of mail
lists and newsgroups. You will exchange information and ideas about
the works of, and the people known as, the Bronte Sisters. Then you
will acquaint yourself with the lives and works of the sisters by visiting
the birthplace of Emily, Anne and Charlotte, by meeting other children
in the family, and by learning how important the family was to them
and the stories they wrote. Additionally, you will discover many of
the lesser known works of the sisters on various other Web sites and
Internet resources.
Course Outline: This course is self-directed and designed
for teachers to learn the Internet and develop lesson plans on course
subjects using Internet resources. While focusing on the course subject,
the student will discover a vast resource of sites, browsers, e-mail
addresses, mail lists, chat rooms, blogs and newsgroups providing
incredible information. A series of worksheets (either in hard copy
or delivered via the Internet) will be completed demonstrating the student's
knowledge of designated Internet assignments, and submittal of a completed
lesson plan or project suitable for implementation in the classroom.
A minimum of 45 hours of course work will be required to complete this
course. Access to computer and modem is necessary.
Method of Evaluating Student's Performance: Investigations
section will be evaluated according to accuracy and thoroughness, and
the lesson plan or project will be evaluated on thoroughness, originality
and creativity.

Credit:
Semester hours of non-degree Professional
Development Credit are offered through Loyola Marymount University.
Coursework is designed to meet a minimum of 15 hours per credit earned.
Students meeting course requirements earn a grade on their transcript
of CR (the equivalent of a letter grade of B or better.) Students not
meeting requirements earn a grade of NC (no credit). Professional Development
Credit is not applicable toward any undergraduate or graduate degree
at Loyola Marymount University.
Credit is recorded
on an Official Transcript issued upon request. Enhancement Courses are
designed for educators with at least a bachelors degree and appropriate
teaching credentials. They may also be appropriate for other professionals
requiring this type of credit for some professional advancement requirements
such as salary movement and recertification.
Participants are
advised to check with their school district or credit evaluation entity
to determine if this type of credit will be approved for their specific
needs, as requirements vary and tuition is nonrefundable.
Accountability
Extensive measures are taken to ensure that all course work is original
work by the student. Signed time records and accountability safeguards
are incorporated as requirements for successful completion.
